Ductless Mini Split Seven Zone

Ductless Mini Split Seven Zone

Seven zone ductless mini split heat pumps heat and cool seven rooms from one outdoor unit. Each room gets its own indoor unit and its own setpoint, so you only heat the rooms that are in use. These systems are a common fit for large residences and light commercial floors where seven rooms are heated and cooled from one outdoor unit.

This category lists complete seven-zone heat pump systems: one multi-zone outdoor unit matched with seven indoor units, plus any branch boxes the manufacturer requires. Every system in this category provides both heating and cooling.

How a Seven Zone Heat Pump Heats Your Home

An inverter-driven heat pump moves heat from the outdoor air into the house instead of burning fuel. The compressor speeds up and slows down to match the load, which keeps room temperatures steady and avoids the on/off cycling of many older systems. Cold-climate models, such as Mitsubishi Electric Hyper-Heat outdoor units, are designed to keep producing useful heat at very low outdoor temperatures. Check each listing's rated heating capacity at 47°F and 17°F, its HSPF2 rating and its low ambient operating limit to see how it will perform in your climate.

Sizing a Seven Zone System

  • Size each zone on its own. Start with a room-by-room heat loss and heat gain calculation (Manual J). Each indoor unit should match the load of the room it serves, not the size of the house.
  • Check the total connected capacity. The seven indoor units together must fall within the outdoor unit's allowed connection range. The systems listed here already use approved combinations.
  • Plan for the coldest days. In colder regions, compare heating capacity at 5°F or 17°F, not just the nominal rating, and decide whether you want backup heat for extreme cold.

Choosing Indoor Units

Seven zone systems in this category are grouped by indoor unit style: wall mounted, ceiling recessed, floor mounted and ducted. Wall mounted heads cover most rooms at the lowest cost. Ceiling cassettes keep walls clear. Floor consoles put warm air at floor level. Ducted units hide the equipment and can serve a large room or a group of small rooms.

Installation and Electrical

A seven-zone system needs a refrigerant line set and condensate drain for each indoor unit, a dedicated circuit for the outdoor unit and control wiring between the units. Systems that use branch boxes also need space for the box between the outdoor unit and the indoor units. R-454B systems must be installed by technicians trained to handle A2L refrigerants. Professional installation is recommended, and most areas require a permit.

Seven Zone Heat Pump FAQ

Q: Can a seven zone heat pump replace a furnace?

A: In many homes, yes. A correctly sized cold-climate system can carry the full heating load. In very cold climates some owners keep a furnace, boiler or electric heat as backup for the coldest days.

Q: Do all seven rooms have to run at the same time?

A: No. Each indoor unit has its own controls. Rooms can be off or set to different temperatures, and the inverter outdoor unit adjusts its output to the rooms that are calling.

Q: Can one zone heat while another cools?

A: Standard multi-zone heat pumps run all active indoor units in the same mode, heating or cooling, at one time. Heat-recovery systems that heat and cool at the same time are a separate commercial product type.

Q: Is a seven zone system more efficient than seven single-zone systems?

A: Not always. Single-zone systems often carry higher efficiency ratings, while a multi-zone system needs only one outdoor unit and one outdoor circuit. Compare SEER2 and HSPF2 on the specific listings and weigh outdoor space, appearance and installed cost.

Q: What is included with each system?

A: Each listing shows the outdoor unit, each indoor unit and any branch boxes by model number. Line sets, line set covers, mounting pads, disconnects and thermostats or wired controllers are usually sold separately unless the listing says otherwise.
