Horizontal Gas Furnaces

Horizontal gas furnaces are HVAC heating systems designed to operate in a side-flow configuration, making them ideal for attics, crawl spaces, suspended platforms, and low-clearance mechanical rooms where vertical installation is not practical. Instead of moving air upward or downward, these furnaces distribute heated air horizontally through the duct system for efficient whole-home comfort.

They use natural gas to generate heat and are commonly paired with central air conditioners or heat pumps in split HVAC systems for complete year-round climate control.

What you’ll find here

Horizontal gas furnace units for residential HVAC systems
High-efficiency condensing furnaces (90%–97% AFUE)
Standard 80% AFUE furnace models
Single-stage, two-stage, and variable-speed blower systems
Compact furnaces for attic and crawl space installations
Systems compatible with split AC and heat pump setups

How to choose

Confirm horizontal orientation is required for your installation space
Use a proper heat load calculation (Manual J) for accurate furnace sizing
Match furnace airflow (CFM) with your duct system and cooling equipment
Compare AFUE ratings for energy efficiency and fuel savings
Choose variable-speed blowers for quieter and more consistent airflow
Verify compatibility with evaporator coils and outdoor condensers
Check venting requirements (PVC for high-efficiency, metal for 80% systems)
Ensure there is adequate service and maintenance access around the unit

Horizontal vs Upflow & Downflow Furnaces

Horizontal furnaces: Air flows sideways, ideal for attics and crawl spaces
Upflow furnaces: Air moves upward, commonly used in basements or utility closets
Downflow furnaces: Air moves downward, often installed in attics or rooftop systems
Horizontal systems: Best for low-clearance or space-constrained installations

FAQ

What is a horizontal gas furnace?
It is a furnace designed to operate with horizontal airflow instead of vertical airflow.

Where are horizontal furnaces installed?
They are commonly installed in attics, crawl spaces, suspended platforms, and tight mechanical areas.

Do horizontal furnaces work with air conditioners?
Yes. They are commonly paired with central AC or heat pump systems.

Are horizontal furnaces efficient?
Yes. High-efficiency models can achieve AFUE ratings up to 97%.

Can a standard furnace be installed horizontally?
Only if the model is specifically approved for horizontal installation.

Do horizontal furnaces require professional installation?
Yes. Proper installation ensures safe venting, airflow setup, drainage, and gas connection.
