Natural Gas Pool Heater

Keeping a pool at a comfortable swim temperature sounds simple until the weather turns and the water sits 20 degrees colder than you'd like. A natural gas pool heater solves that problem directly: it burns natural gas to heat water as it circulates through the unit, recovering temperature fast and holding it there even in cool air. Because pool heaters carry real capacity and installation requirements, getting the right unit matched to the right pool matters more than most equipment decisions in this category. HVAC365 stocks a broad selection across capacity ranges and configurations, so whether you're replacing an aging heater or speccing a new installation, you're not left waiting on a special order when the pool season is already running.

A natural gas pool heater is purpose-built for one job: heating a body of water efficiently enough that the operating cost stays reasonable and the recovery time stays short. The category covers heaters intended for swimming pools and spas, ranging from units sized for a modest backyard pool to larger units suited for commercial aquatic facilities. Buyers in this category include homeowners doing a straightforward replacement on an existing system, contractors speccing and installing heaters for residential or commercial clients, and distributors sourcing inventory for their own resale or service fleets. If you're exploring the broader pool heater lineup, you'll find this category sits alongside other heating technologies, but natural gas heaters occupy their own distinct space for buyers who have a gas line on site and want fast heat recovery.

Sizing and Selecting the Right Gas Pool Heater

Capacity is the first thing to get right, and it's also the easiest thing to get wrong. A pool heater's output is rated in BTUs per hour, and the number you need is driven by the surface area of the pool, the desired temperature rise above your coldest expected ambient conditions, and whether the pool is covered when not in use. Undersizing means slow recovery and a heater that runs constantly without ever catching up. Oversizing costs more upfront and, with some configurations, can cause operational issues over time. The right starting point is a heat loss calculation based on your specific pool dimensions and local climate, not a rule-of-thumb guess based on gallons alone.

Application type shapes the decision next. A residential backyard pool with moderate use has different demand patterns than a hotel pool expected to maintain temperature around the clock, or a therapy pool held at a higher setpoint. Commercial installations often call for higher-output units built to handle continuous-duty cycles, and the venting and gas supply requirements scale with that output. If the application crosses into commercial territory, verify that the unit you're considering is rated and listed for commercial use before committing.

Efficiency is the third lever. Modern gas pool heaters vary in thermal efficiency, and higher-efficiency models typically carry a higher purchase price but lower operating cost over time. Some utility programs and local jurisdictions offer rebates on pool heaters that meet specific efficiency thresholds. Look up what's available in your area before you finalize the selection, because the rebate can meaningfully shift the economics. The installation-readiness factors covered further down, including gas supply capacity and venting type, also interact with the efficiency decision: some high-efficiency condensing units require different venting than older atmospheric designs, and retrofitting that venting adds cost.

For a distributor or contractor buying across multiple jobs, lead time and consistent availability matter as much as spec. A unit that's the right size but routinely backordered creates scheduling problems that a slightly broader stocked selection can prevent.

Buying Tips

Match the gas supply before you order. Natural gas pool heaters at higher BTU ratings draw significant gas volume. A residential gas meter and line sized for a house's heating and cooking load may not have the capacity headroom to feed a large pool heater without starving other appliances. Have a plumber or gas technician verify available gas pressure and line size before the unit ships, not after it's sitting on the pad.
Check local code on venting before selecting a model. Atmospheric and power-vent heaters vent differently, and some jurisdictions restrict where and how each type can terminate. A heater that vents the wrong direction for your installation site, or that requires a vent run longer than the unit's rated maximum, is a problem that surfaces at inspection. Pull the local requirements first.
Don't skip the cover calculation. Pool covers dramatically reduce heat loss overnight. If the pool doesn't currently have a cover, the heater size a calculation recommends for an uncovered pool may be significantly larger than what's actually needed with a cover in place. It's worth pricing both scenarios before committing to a BTU rating, because a cover is usually far cheaper than stepping up to the next heater size.
Confirm the warranty terms include the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is the most expensive component in a gas pool heater and the one most exposed to water chemistry. Some warranties have separate, shorter terms on the heat exchanger, and water chemistry outside the specified range can void that coverage. Review the warranty language and pair it with a commitment to proper water balance from day one.

How Natural Gas Pool Heaters Are Configured

Within the natural gas pool heater category, the most meaningful configuration differences come down to venting design, ignition type, and whether the unit is built for a standard pool, a spa, or a combination system.

Atmospheric (draft) heaters draw combustion air from the surrounding space and exhaust through a flue. They're a common replacement choice for older installations already set up for this venting style, and they generally have a lower upfront cost. Siting matters: they need adequate clearance and cannot be enclosed in a way that restricts combustion air.
Power-vent heaters use a powered blower to move combustion air and exhaust, which gives more flexibility in where the heater can be installed and where the vent terminates. This makes them useful when the pad location doesn't allow for a traditional flue run.
Pool-only vs. pool-and-spa configurations differ in how they handle the higher setpoint a spa requires. A unit designed for pool-and-spa use can bring a spa up to temperature quickly and then drop back to maintaining the pool, which is a different thermal demand than a dedicated pool heater handles. If the installation includes both a pool and a spa on the same system, verify the heater is designed for that dual-use role.
Low-NOx models are required by regulation in certain regions, particularly in California and parts of the Southwest. If the installation is in one of those areas, verify the unit carries the required low-NOx certification before ordering, because a standard model may not pass inspection.

What It Takes to Install a Natural Gas Pool Heater

Gas pool heaters sit outdoors and connect to three things: the pool's circulation plumbing, a natural gas supply, and a flue or vent termination. All three need to be in order before the unit goes in.

On the gas side, check that the available pressure at the heater location meets the unit's minimum inlet pressure specification. Look that figure up on the spec sheet for the specific model you're installing. Also measure the distance from the gas meter or regulator to the installation pad and verify that the pipe diameter along that run is adequate to deliver the required flow at the required pressure. A gas supply that's marginal on a cold night when the house heating is also running can cause the heater to misfire or underperform.

Venting type determines where and how the exhaust leaves the unit. Atmospheric heaters need a vertical flue with the correct rise and cap; power-vent units allow horizontal termination within the limits the manufacturer specifies. Measure the actual vent run from the heater to the termination point and compare it against the maximum listed in the installation manual. Exceeding that limit restricts exhaust flow and can create safety and performance problems.

Plumbing connections on a gas pool heater are typically standard union fittings matched to the pool's return and supply lines. Verify the port size and flow rate requirements match the existing or planned circulation system. The pump needs to be running whenever the heater fires; most units include a flow switch or require a field-supplied one to enforce this. A heater that fires without adequate water flow can damage the heat exchanger in a short time.

Clearances matter both for safety and for serviceability. Measure the pad location against the minimum clearances listed for that model on all sides and above. Natural gas pool heaters positioned too close to a structure, fence, or vegetation can create a hazard and may fail inspection. Also consider access for future service: a unit that's difficult to reach for burner cleaning or heat exchanger inspection is one that tends to go without maintenance.

Controls integration is worth thinking through before installation. Most modern gas pool heaters include a digital control panel that sets temperature and displays fault codes, and many support external control via automation systems or pool controllers. If the pool equipment pad already runs on a control system, look at how the heater interfaces with it before settling on a model, because not every unit speaks the same protocol or uses the same wiring method.

Water chemistry affects the heat exchanger's service life directly. Before commissioning, verify the pool water is balanced to the manufacturer's specified ranges for pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness. Water that's outside spec, even briefly, accelerates corrosion on copper heat exchangers and is one of the most common causes of premature failure.

Things You Should Know Before You Buy

Q: How do I know what BTU rating my pool needs?

A: Start with a heat loss calculation using your pool's surface area, the temperature rise you want, your local ambient conditions, and whether the pool has a cover — all of which the sizing section above walks through in detail. Pool and spa professionals or the heater manufacturer's sizing tools can run that calculation with you. Guessing based on pool volume alone routinely produces an undersized unit.

Q: Can I replace my existing gas pool heater with a different brand or model?

A: Usually yes, as long as the replacement unit matches or exceeds the BTU output of the original, fits within the existing plumbing and venting footprint, and meets current local code requirements including any low-NOx mandates in your area. Verify the port sizes, venting type, and gas connection before ordering to avoid surprises at installation.

Q: What's the difference between a pool heater and a pool heat pump?

A: A natural gas pool heater burns gas to generate heat directly, so it can raise pool temperature quickly regardless of outside air temperature. A heat pump moves heat from the surrounding air into the water and uses electricity rather than gas, so it's more efficient in mild weather but slower to recover temperature and less effective when the air is cold. The right choice depends on your climate, utility rates, and how fast you need the pool to heat.

Q: Do gas pool heaters require a dedicated electrical circuit?

A: Most natural gas pool heaters require a small amount of line voltage power for the control board, ignition, and in some cases a power-vent blower. Check the electrical specification on the unit's spec sheet or rating label and verify the equipment pad has a circuit of the correct voltage and amperage available. This is a small but easy-to-overlook item that can delay installation if the circuit isn't already in place.

Q: How often does a gas pool heater need to be serviced?

A: An annual inspection by a qualified service technician is standard practice for most gas pool heaters. That typically includes checking the burners, heat exchanger, igniter, venting, and water chemistry interface. Consistent pool water chemistry between service visits does as much to extend heater life as the service call itself, because scale and corrosion damage accumulates year-round.

Q: What voids the heat exchanger warranty?

A: Most manufacturers specifically list water chemistry outside specified ranges as a warranty exclusion for the heat exchanger — low pH and high sanitizer concentrations are the most common culprits. The warranty tip above covers what to review before installation. Keep water chemistry logs, because documentation of proper water balance is often required to support a claim.

Q: Are natural gas pool heaters allowed in all areas?

A: Natural gas pool heaters are permitted in most of the country, but certain regions require low-NOx certified models and some local jurisdictions have additional restrictions on gas appliances near pools. As noted in the configuration section above, California and other states with stricter emissions standards are the most common cases. Verify local requirements before purchasing.
