40,000 BTU Gas Furnaces (Downflow)

40,000 BTU downflow gas furnaces are compact, low-capacity heating systems designed for smaller homes, apartments, or tight mechanical spaces that require downward airflow configuration. They are commonly installed in attics or elevated HVAC setups where air must move downward into the duct system to properly distribute heat.

These furnaces use natural gas to deliver consistent, efficient heating and are often used in gas-electric split systems paired with appropriately sized air conditioners or heat pumps.

What you’ll find here

  • 40,000 BTU downflow gas furnace units
  • High-efficiency condensing furnaces (90%–97% AFUE)
  • Standard 80% AFUE furnace models
  • Single-stage and multi-stage heating options
  • Variable-speed blower configurations
  • Compact residential systems for space-limited installations

How to choose

  • Confirm downflow orientation is required for your installation space
  • Size using a proper heat load calculation (Manual J recommended)
  • Match furnace airflow (CFM) with duct size and AC/heat pump system
  • Compare AFUE ratings for energy efficiency and fuel savings
  • Choose variable-speed blowers for quieter and more even heating
  • Verify compatibility with evaporator coil and condenser pairing
  • Check venting type (PVC for high-efficiency, metal for 80% models)
  • Ensure condensate drainage setup is suitable for installation location

Downflow 40,000 BTU vs Other Configurations

  • Downflow units: Designed for attic or elevated installations with downward airflow
  • Upflow units: Installed at ground or basement level with upward airflow
  • Horizontal units: Used when space constraints require side airflow
  • 40,000 BTU systems: Best for small heating loads and compact homes
