Its big idea was what it calls Vendor Consolidation: rather than opening accounts with hundreds of separate manufacturers, a distributor could buy from many of them through a single source. Pools lose water every day to evaporation, splashing and backwashing. If the level drops below the skimmer opening, the pump can draw air and run dry. A float valve solves that without electricity: a float rides on the water surface inside a leveler housing, and when the level falls, the float drops and opens a valve fed by a water supply line. As the pool refills, the float rises and closes the valve again. It is the same principle as the fill valve in a toilet tank, put to work on a much larger body of water.
