In 1909, in Nuremberg, Germany, a master mechanic named Daniel Speck went into business with his five sons. Their first product was a plunger pump with a draining device, a piece of practical machinery for a world that still ran on muscle and steam. More than a century later, the same family company builds pumps for swimming pools on two continents, and the name on many of them is Badu.
Daniel Speck & Sons spent its first half century in general pump making. In 1964 the company launched its swimming pool technology, including the Badu series of pumps and counter-current swim units, the machines that let a swimmer stroke in place against a steady current. Three years later, in 1967, Speck introduced what it describes as the world's first corrosion-resistant plastic pump for private pools. The company moved from Nuremberg to Lauf an der Pegnitz in 1976, and at the end of 2004 to a larger site in Neunkirchen am Sand, where Badu pumps have been assembled since 2008. Hermann Speck, a great-grandson of the founder, took over the business in 1994.
The family name crossed the Atlantic in 1983, when Speck Pumps began manufacturing in the United States to meet demand for its pool pumps and Badu swim jets. Speck Pumps USA is based in Jacksonville, Florida, and Jan Baljon, who joined Speck in 1978 and was sent to build the American operation, still leads it as president.
Speck Pumps makes residential and commercial pool pumps, spa and jetted bathtub pumps, Badu swim jet systems and a wide range of industrial liquid and vacuum pumps. HVAC365 carries a Badu variable-speed in-ground pool pump in its pool pumps and variable speed pool pumps categories: a 1.65 total horsepower model with 2-inch connections that runs on either 120 or 240 volts. A variable-speed pump can turn slowly for long periods of quiet, efficient filtration and speed up only when the pool needs more flow, such as for vacuuming or running a spa.
Badu is a brand of Speck Pumps, a family-owned German pump maker founded in Nuremberg in 1909 by Daniel Speck and his five sons.
Speck launched its swimming pool technology, including the Badu series of pumps and counter-current swim units, in 1964.
Speck Pumps has manufactured in the United States since 1983 through Speck Pumps USA in Jacksonville, Florida, and Badu pumps are also assembled at the company's site in Neunkirchen am Sand, Germany.
A Badu swim jet is a counter-current unit that produces a steady stream of water so a person can swim in place, turning a small pool into a training pool.
