In the Phoenix area, a backyard pool is less a luxury than a way to survive July. It is also a magnet for dust, leaves and the fine grit of the desert, and generations of Arizona pool builders have chased the same dream: a pool that keeps itself clean while people are swimming in it. In 2010, a pool professional named Tim Murphy, a small team of industry veterans and a hydraulic engineer set up shop in Chandler, Arizona, to build their own version of that dream.
Blue Square Manufacturing was founded in 2010 by Murphy and a group whose members brought more than 40 years of combined experience in pool manufacturing. Their first product was the Q360, an in-floor cleaning system. Instead of a robot crawling along the bottom or a hose-trailing suction cleaner, the Q360 relies on flush-mounted jets set into the pool floor and steps. Each jet rises, rotates through a full 360 degrees and sweeps debris toward the main drain, then drops back level with the surface when the cycle moves to the next zone.
Because the jets are part of the pool itself, the system can run while people swim. The company also points to two quieter benefits: moving water across every surface helps distribute sanitizer, which can reduce chemical use, and circulating water from the bottom helps a heated pool warm more evenly in cooler climates.
From in-floor cleaning, Blue Square expanded into the other parts of a pool that live below the waterline. Its LED lighting lines include Vivid 360 and GalaxyBrite, with retrofit kits built to fit niches originally made for Pentair and Hayward lights, so an older pool can trade incandescent bulbs for color-changing or white LED fixtures without cutting into the shell. Nicheless versions mount almost flush with the wall. The company also builds drains, including the large Hydrofusion main drain, and decorative caps such as the Eclipse.
Blue Square also makes retrofit parts for other companies' in-floor systems. Its R360 retro head, for example, is built to drop into A&A Quik Clean II fittings, a practical bridge for pools built years ago with another brand's floor jets.
Blue Square's catalog centers on what is built into a pool rather than added to it. HVAC365 carries pieces from each of its main lines:
In-floor systems are planned during construction, when the plumbing for each zone of jets is laid in the shell. That is why the retrofit and replacement pieces matter so much: once a pool is built with floor jets, its owner will be shopping for heads, collars and valve parts for decades.

Some can. Blue Square's R360 retro head, for example, is designed as a replacement head for A&A Quik Clean II fittings.
