Main Drains

The main drain sits at the deepest point of the pool floor and does more than most people realize. It pulls water from the bottom, where the coldest water and heaviest debris settle, helps circulation and chemical mixing, and lets you lower or drain the pool when needed. It is also a suction outlet, which means it carries one of the most serious safety risks in the pool. Modern main drain design is built around preventing entrapment, through compliant covers, dual drains, sump design and backup systems like a safety vacuum release system (SVRS).

How Main Drains Work

A main drain is a sump, or pot, set into the pool floor and plumbed to the pump's suction side. A cover sits on top. When the pump runs, water flows through the cover into the sump and down the drain line to the pump. A valve at the equipment pad usually lets you balance flow between the main drain and skimmers.

  • Sump depth. Many compliant covers require a minimum sump depth to maintain their flow rating and safety. Shallow older sumps may need a retrofit sump or a specific cover.
  • Dual drains. Two drains spaced apart and plumbed together, so if one is blocked, the other still carries the flow. Codes often specify a minimum distance between drains, commonly 3 feet center to center, measured as the code defines.
  • Hydrostatic relief. Some main drains include a hydrostatic relief valve that opens to let groundwater in if the water table rises, helping protect the pool shell from floating or cracking when drained. Not every pool has one.

Signs a Main Drain Needs Repair or Replacement

  • Cracked or damaged sump or frame. Can lead to leaks or a cover that won't stay secure.
  • Leaks around the drain. A dye test can show water being pulled into cracks around the sump.
  • Single non-compliant drain. Older pools with a single drain and no other protection may need a dual drain retrofit, SVRS or other approved measure.

Installation and Safety Tips

  • Use a qualified pool professional. Main drain installation, retrofits and anti-entrapment systems are safety-critical. Have them installed by a qualified pool builder or service company, following local code.
  • Turn off and lock out the pump. Never work on a suction outlet with the pump running.
