Anyone who has spent an afternoon at an indoor pool knows the smell, the red eyes and the itchy skin, and most people blame chlorine. Much of that discomfort actually comes from the by-products chlorine forms as it reacts with what swimmers bring into the water. Clear Comfort was built around the idea that pool water could be cleaned another way, with far less of that chemistry hanging in the air.
In 2014 Steve Berens, Clear Comfort's co-founder and CEO, introduced a patented water treatment approach based on hydroxyl radicals, a form of advanced oxidation process, or AOP. The system generates hydroxyl radicals that oxidize contaminants and break down chlorine disinfection by-products, and the company says it destroys chlorine-resistant pathogens such as Cryptosporidium and Legionella. Clear Comfort reports that its systems typically cut chemical use, including chlorine, by 30 to 50 percent.
The technology now serves residential pools and spas, aquatic centers, water parks, hotels, universities and multifamily buildings, as well as cooling towers and livestock operations. In 2021 Clear Comfort won first place for sustainability in the blooloop Innovation Awards, and the CCW100 has been named a Pool & Spa News Top 50 Product and an Aquatics International Most Valuable Product.
HVAC365 carries the Clear Comfort CCW100 pool system with its manifold kit, found in our AOP sanitizer systems collection within filters and sanitizers. The CCW100 is built for medium to large residential pools with flow rates up to 90 GPM. Its manifold fits into an 11-inch section of pipe, and routine maintenance is a once-a-year cartridge exchange that takes about five minutes with no special tools. Clear Comfort lists NSF 50 and UL certifications and EPA registration under FIFRA Section 7, and backs the system with a 5-year warranty.
Clear Comfort Water, Inc. makes hydroxyl-based advanced oxidation process (AOP) water treatment systems for pools, spas, water parks and other water systems. Its co-founder and CEO is Steve Berens.
Advanced oxidation uses highly reactive hydroxyl radicals to oxidize contaminants in the water and break down the chlorine by-products that cause much of the odor and irritation associated with pools.
No. Clear Comfort describes pool water with drinking-water chlorine levels, meaning a low chlorine residual remains, and reports typical chemical reductions of 30 to 50 percent.
The CCW100 needs an annual cartridge exchange that takes about five minutes and requires no special tools.
