Florida pools have an odd problem. For much of the year the water is too warm, and for a few weeks each winter it is too cold to enjoy. A pool heat pump can solve both, pulling heat out of the air on a mild January afternoon and, on the right models, running in reverse to cool the water in August. For years, a Florida manufacturer called G&F Manufacturing built those machines for the Southeast and sold them under the name Gulfstream.
G&F Manufacturing, LLC built and serviced heat pumps for swimming pools under the Gulfstream brand, concentrating on customers in the southeastern United States. That focus mattered. In a climate with mild winters and long, hot summers, a heat pump can heat a pool far more economically than a gas heater, and in summer the same machine can be asked to do the opposite job.
On December 3, 2024, Pentair, the pool and water equipment manufacturer, announced that it had acquired G&F Manufacturing for about $108 million in cash. Pentair said the Gulfstream line would expand its offerings for Florida customers. Jerome Pedretti, chief executive of Pentair Pool, explained the logic plainly:
"Heat pumps are an important offering for customers in critical geographical regions."
Gulfstream heat pumps are now documented and supported under the Pentair name, alongside the rest of Pentair's pool equipment family.
Gulfstream builds heat pumps for swimming pools and spas. Its HE series includes heat-only models and Heat/Cool models, such as the HE125-TA and HE150-TA, that can either heat or chill the water to a set temperature. Each uses a titanium heat exchanger for corrosion resistance and a scroll compressor paired with a larger, slower-turning fan to keep sound levels down. HVAC365 carries Gulfstream in our heat pump pool heater category, including a 137,000 BTU, COP 6.1 Heat/Cool model on 230V power, alongside the broader pool heater range and the rest of our pool and spa equipment. Heat/Cool models let the same unit warm the water in winter and take the edge off it at the height of a Florida summer.
A pool heat pump is a close cousin of a home heat pump. A fan pulls outdoor air across an evaporator coil, where refrigerant absorbs its heat. The compressor raises the temperature of that refrigerant, and the heat is handed off to pool water flowing through the heat exchanger. Efficiency is expressed as COP, the ratio of heat delivered to electricity used, so a COP of 6.1 means about six units of heat for every unit of electricity under the rating conditions. Heat/Cool models add a reversing valve so the same circuit can pull heat out of the water instead.
Pentair's current Gulfstream specification sheet lists seven years of parts coverage and two years of labor coverage on its heat pumps. The manufacturer's warranty document for each model sets the final terms.

Yes, Heat/Cool models such as the HE125-TA and HE150-TA can either heat or chill pool water to a set temperature.
COP, or coefficient of performance, compares the heat delivered to the electricity used. A COP of 6.1 means roughly six units of heat for each unit of electricity under rating conditions.
