The Brand Story

Lochinvar: A Family Water Heating Story That Settled in Tennessee

Walter Vallett Sr. went into the water heater business in 1919, when hot water on demand was still a modern luxury. Two decades later he put his name on his own company, and the family business that grew from it would eventually move from Michigan to Tennessee and become one of the best-known names in boilers and water heating.

Chapter 1 · 1919 to 1980

From Detroit to Nashville

After starting with the Everhot Water Heating Company, Vallett founded the Walter Vallett Company in 1939. In 1957 it became the Lochinvar Water Heater Corporation, headquartered in Detroit. In 1970 the company bought the Wagoner Water Heater Company and moved to Nashville, and in 1980 the Vallett family founded the Lochinvar of today. Its Power-Fin high-efficiency boiler followed in 1986.

Chapter 2 · 2001 to today

Lebanon, Tennessee, and A. O. Smith

In 2001 Lochinvar opened a 360,000 square foot headquarters and manufacturing plant in Lebanon, Tennessee, east of Nashville. In 2011 A. O. Smith, the large American water heater maker, acquired Lochinvar in a deal valued at $418 million, and the plant and engineering labs were expanded in 2015.
