In 2010 two former Apple engineers, Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers, looked at the beige box on the wall that controls most of a home's energy use and decided it deserved the same attention as a phone. Nest Labs, based in Palo Alto, shipped its first Learning Thermostat in October 2011.
Google bought Nest Labs in January 2014 for $3.2 billion. In 2018 Nest was folded into Google's home hardware team, and in 2019 Google Nest became the name for all of Google's home products. In August 2024 Google introduced the fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, with a borderless display, outdoor temperature awareness, Matter support and a Soli radar sensor that notices when someone approaches.
The idea behind the original design has not changed. Instead of asking homeowners to program a schedule, the Learning Thermostat watches how they adjust the temperature and builds a schedule of its own, so the heating and cooling equipment runs less when nobody needs it.
Google Nest makes thermostats, cameras, doorbells, speakers and displays. HVAC365 carries the 4th Gen Nest Learning Thermostat in a configuration listed for up to 3 heating and 2 cooling stages. Browse thermostats and HVAC smart home products.
