Pool Skimmers

Pool Skimmers

The skimmer is the pool's first line of defense against debris. Leaves, bugs, pollen, sunscreen film and floating trash get pulled into the skimmer basket before they sink to the floor, stain the plaster or clog the pump. A working skimmer keeps the surface clean and lightens the load on the filter and cleaner. A cracked, leaking or poorly maintained skimmer does the opposite: it lets water escape, pulls air into the pump and lets debris through.

This category covers complete pool skimmers and skimmer parts from brands such as Hayward, Pentair, Jandy/Zodiac, Waterway and others. It includes inground skimmers for concrete, vinyl and fiberglass pools, above-ground skimmers, lids, baskets, weirs, equalizer assemblies, extension collars, gaskets and face plates. Builders buy complete skimmers for new construction and remodels, techs buy baskets and weirs for routine service, and homeowners buy replacement lids and baskets that have cracked or gone missing.

How a Pool Skimmer Works

The skimmer is built into the pool wall at the waterline and plumbed to the pump's suction side. When the pump runs, water flows over the weir into the skimmer body.

  • Throat. The opening in the pool wall where water enters the skimmer.
  • Weir door. A floating flap at the throat that rises and falls with the water level, skimming the top layer. When the pump shuts off, it closes and keeps debris from floating back out.
  • Basket. Catches leaves and debris before they reach the pump.
  • Lid and collar. The lid sits flush with the deck and gives access to the basket. Collars let the lid height match the deck.
  • Equalizer line. Many older skimmers have a second line through the pool wall below the skimmer, which protects the pump if the water level drops below the throat. Current anti-entrapment rules affect how equalizers are treated, so many are now plugged or fitted with a compliant cover.
  • Diverter or float valve. Some skimmers have a valve that balances flow between the skimmer and main drain.

Signs Your Skimmer Needs Repair or Replacement

  • Water loss. Cracks in the skimmer body, separation between the skimmer and the pool wall, or leaks at plumbing connections. A dye test around the throat and inside the body helps find leaks.
  • Air in the pump basket. Low water level, a leaking skimmer or a damaged skimmer fitting can let air into the suction line.
  • Cracked lid. A trip hazard and an open path for debris. Replace it right away.
  • Broken or missing weir. Debris floats back out when the pump stops, and skimming efficiency drops.
  • Cracked or torn basket. Debris gets through to the pump, clogging the pump basket or impeller.
  • Skimmer separating from the deck. Ground movement, freeze damage or failed concrete around the skimmer.
  • Freeze damage. In cold climates, water left in the skimmer can freeze and crack the body. Proper winterizing helps prevent this.

How to Choose the Right Skimmer or Skimmer Parts

  1. Identify the brand and model. Look on the lid, inside the skimmer body or on the weir for markings. The shape of the lid and throat helps identify it.
  2. Match the pool type. Concrete pools use skimmers set in concrete. Vinyl and fiberglass pools use skimmers with face plates and gaskets that clamp to the liner or shell.
  3. Throat size. Standard and wide-mouth skimmers are available. Wide-mouth skimmers can pull more surface debris but need more flow.
  4. Pipe size and connections. Common sizes are 1.5 inch and 2 inch. Check whether the plumbing is slip or threaded.
  5. Lid and basket fit. Lids and baskets vary by model, so match them carefully. Universal replacements are available for some common sizes.
  6. Above-ground skimmers. Above-ground skimmers mount through the pool wall and are matched to the wall type and liner style. Check whether the pool uses an overlap or beaded liner and whether the skimmer is a standard or wide-mouth design.
  7. Retrofit options. For older skimmers with discontinued lids or baskets, universal replacements or retrofit kits can often extend the skimmer's life.

Simple Skimmer Upgrades Worth Considering

When you are already replacing a lid or basket, a few small upgrades can make the skimmer easier to live with.

  • Heavier-duty baskets. Baskets with a sturdier rim and handle hold up better to daily emptying and leaf season. Some designs hold more debris before restricting flow.
  • Skimmer socks and liners. A fine mesh sock over the basket catches pollen, hair and fine silt, which takes load off the filter. Change or rinse them often so they don't choke the flow.
  • Replacement weirs. A weir that floats freely does far more skimming than one that sticks or is missing. It is one of the cheapest parts on the pool and one of the most often ignored.
  • Lid height collars. After resurfacing or deck work, an adjustable collar can bring the lid back flush with the deck so it isn't a trip hazard.
  • Winterizing plugs. In freeze areas, keeping a proper skimmer plug or ice compensator on hand before closing season protects the skimmer body.

Installation and Safety Tips

  • Turn the pump off before working on the skimmer. Never reach into a skimmer with the pump running.
  • Use the right sealant and gaskets. On vinyl and fiberglass pools, use the gaskets supplied with the skimmer, and tighten face plate screws evenly to avoid tearing the liner or cracking plastic.
  • Set the skimmer level. During construction, the skimmer must be level and set at the right height relative to the waterline and coping.
  • Pressure test the plumbing. Test lines before pouring concrete or closing the deck.
  • Address equalizer lines. Many older equalizer lines can be a suction hazard. Plug them or install a compliant cover according to local code and manufacturer guidance.
  • Winterize properly in cold climates. Lower the water below the throat, blow out the lines, and use a skimmer winterizing plug or a Gizzmo-style device to absorb ice expansion.
  • Keep water at mid-throat. Too low, and the pump pulls air. Too high, and the weir can't skim.
  • Empty baskets often. A full basket reduces flow and can damage the pump.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out what skimmer I have?

Look for a brand or model on the lid, weir or inside the skimmer body. Measure the lid diameter and basket size. Photos of the lid, throat and inside help.

Can I repair a cracked skimmer?

Small cracks can often be repaired with pool putty or a skimmer repair kit. Larger cracks or a separated skimmer may need replacement, which usually means cutting out part of the deck.

What is a wide-mouth skimmer?

A skimmer with a wider throat that pulls more surface water and debris. It needs good flow to work well.

Why does my skimmer pull air?

Usually low water level. It can also be a cracked skimmer, a damaged fitting or a leaking suction line.

What is a skimmer equalizer?

A line below the skimmer that supplies water if the water level drops. Many older equalizers are now plugged or fitted with compliant covers because of anti-entrapment rules.

How often should I empty the skimmer basket?

As often as needed to keep it from filling up. In heavy leaf seasons, that might be daily.
