Description
Product Summary
The Goodman AFE18-60A is the all fuel (dual fuel) control board that lets a standard 24 VAC heat pump work safely with a gas or other fossil fuel furnace. It is used when the heat pump's indoor coil sits above or downstream of the furnace, and it turns the heat pump off whenever the furnace is running, except during a defrost cycle, so the two never heat at the same time.
Goodman lists the AFE18-60A as the dual fuel kit for its gas furnaces. It is required when the system does not use a communicating thermostat or a dual fuel thermostat to manage the heat pump and furnace.
Key Features
- Prevents simultaneous operation of the heat pump and furnace, except during defrost.
- 3-minute compressor anti-short-cycle delay after the compressor shuts off or power is restored.
- 5-second debounce on the Y, E, W1 and O thermostat inputs for stable switching.
- Works with single- and two-stage heat pumps and furnaces.
- Optional OT18-60A outdoor thermostat switches heating from the heat pump to the furnace below your break-even temperature.
- Labeled terminal strips for the thermostat, furnace and heat pump wiring.
Ideal Applications
- Heat pump and gas furnace (dual fuel) split systems
- Adding a heat pump to an existing gas furnace
- Systems wired with a standard heat pump thermostat instead of a dual fuel thermostat
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need this kit for a dual fuel system?
You need it when the heat pump and furnace are controlled by a standard heat pump thermostat. A communicating system or a dual fuel thermostat with an outdoor sensor can control the switchover without it.
What thermostat should I use with it?
Use a heat pump thermostat. With a two-stage furnace, use one with three stages of heat.
How is the switchover temperature set?
Add the optional OT18-60A outdoor thermostat and set it to your break-even temperature. Below that temperature the furnace handles the heating.
Where does it mount?
On the side of the furnace, close to the 24 VAC control wires. It should be installed by a licensed HVAC professional.
