Description
Grandaire 3.5 Ton W5H5S Heat Pump Condenser: W5H5S42AKAAA
The W5H5S42AKAAA is the 3.5-ton outdoor unit in Grandaire's W5H5S single-stage heat pump line, charged for R-454B refrigerant. In summer it cools like a standard air conditioner. In winter the reversing valve flips the cycle and pulls heat out of the outdoor air to warm the house, which makes it a strong fit for Florida, the Gulf Coast and the rest of the Sun Belt, where electric heat strips only need to cover the occasional cold snap.
The line is rated from 14.3 to 16.0 SEER2, 10.0 to 12.5 EER2 and 7.5 to 7.8 HSPF2, depending on size and the indoor unit it is matched with.
What stands out
- Scroll compressor with internal thermal overload and an internal pressure relief valve.
- Suction line accumulator and loss-of-charge switch standard, protecting the compressor from liquid floodback and low-charge operation.
- R-454B refrigerant, the lower-GWP A2L refrigerant required for new split systems.
- Long-line capable up to 250 ft total equivalent length with the proper accessories.
- Front-seating service valves and a field-installed filter drier for a clean, serviceable install.
Matched systems
- WCHL425AC multi-position ECM air handler: 14.5 SEER2 / 12 EER2 / 7.5 HSPF2 (AHRI 214101897)
These pairings are available on HVAC365 as complete heat pump split systems, with heat strips offered as an option.
Installation notes
Set the unit on a level pad high enough to let defrost water drain away and to stay above typical snow or standing-water lines. Keep 24 in. clear at the service panel and 48 in. above the fan. The control circuit is 24V and needs an external power source, normally the air handler transformer. Use a heat pump thermostat with an O/B reversing-valve output and an auxiliary heat stage if heat strips are installed.
Common questions
Do I need heat strips with this heat pump?
In mild climates the heat pump often carries the whole heating load on its own. Where winter design temperatures drop into the 20s or below, a heat strip in the air handler provides backup and defrost heat. Size it from a load calculation, not the tonnage.
Can I reuse my old refrigerant lines?
Sometimes. The lines must be the correct size, leak-free and properly flushed for R-454B. Your installer should inspect them before deciding.
What is the warranty?
Five-year parts limited warranty, including the compressor and coil, which extends to 10 years when the equipment is registered within 90 days of installation, plus a 1-year unit replacement limited warranty.
