In 1950, in Bell Gardens, California, Buddy and Lindy Combest started a pool service company. The work taught them a lesson every service tech eventually learns: the job is rarely held up by the pump or the filter, but by the small part that cannot be found in time.
Aladdin describes its start as "one man with a net and pole."
The Combests opened their first retail store in 1955, and the business grew to 15 locations. In 1963 they founded Aladdin Equipment Company in Huntington Beach to solve the problem they kept running into: a lack of good replacement parts available when a pool needed them. Their daughter, Lindy Smith, took over in 1979 and moved the company to Sarasota, Florida, in 1989. Her daughter, Carrie Collins, took the lead in 2019. Along the way Aladdin created a numbering system for baskets, O-rings and gaskets that became the industry standard, and was among the first to bag and bar-code replacement parts.
