For most of the twentieth century, keeping a public pool safe meant a lifeguard with a test kit, a clipboard and a lot of guessing. Chlorine was dosed by schedule and by feel, and the water swung between too little sanitizer and too much. In 1976, in Santa Barbara, California, a French-born chemical engineer named Dr. Jacques M. Steininger set out to let the water report on itself.
Steininger founded Santa Barbara Control Systems, the company behind the Chemtrol brand, and began research into automating pool and spa chemistry. In 1978 it released controllers compatible with cyanuric acid. In 1986 it introduced what it describes as the first ORP and pH controller designed for pools and spas. In 1990 came CHEMCOM, a remote monitoring system first installed on the pool network of Chicago's parks department, and in 1996 the PC Programmable Controller combined chemical automation, water balance, filter backwashing and heating in a single unit. A free chlorine sensor with a selective membrane followed in 2003.
The company has never left Santa Barbara. Its products and software are designed, coded and assembled in California.
Chemtrol builds chemical controllers, sensors, CO2 feeders, flow interlocks and feed equipment for pools and spas, along with controllers for cooling towers, boilers and municipal water. HVAC365 carries the Chemtrol CH250 digital ORP and pH controller for 110/230V service in our chemical controllers category. It reads oxidation-reduction potential, a measure of how active the sanitizer is, along with pH, and drives feed equipment to hold both in range. More options sit under filters and sanitizers.
Chemtrol is the brand of Santa Barbara Control Systems, founded in Santa Barbara, California, in 1976 by chemical engineer Dr. Jacques M. Steininger.
Chemtrol products and their software are designed, coded and assembled in California.
It continuously measures sanitizer activity, as ORP, and pH in pool or spa water, then switches chemical feeders on and off to keep both within the set range.
The company reports more than 100,000 installations worldwide, mostly on pools and spas, and it also makes controllers for cooling towers, boilers and municipal water systems.
