Many pool owners know the routine too well: red eyes after a swim, a swimsuit fading by midsummer, and the sharp smell of chlorine on everyone's skin. ClearBlue Ionizer, a company based in Mississauga, Ontario, builds mineral systems meant to change that routine. Its idea is simple: let a small, steady dose of copper do part of the work so the chlorine level can come down.
A ClearBlue system pairs a controller with a mineral cell that holds two electrode bars. Low-voltage current passes between the bars and releases copper ions into the water as it flows past. In the hard-plumbed version, a clear PVC tee is glued into the return line after the pump, filter and heater, and the cell threads into it. ClearBlue's manual calls for holding chlorine at normal levels until copper reaches 0.2 ppm, then reducing chlorine to about 1 ppm and keeping copper between 0.2 and 0.4 ppm, tested every two weeks once it is stable.
ClearBlue makes copper mineral ionizers for residential pools in sizes rated by pool volume, along with replacement mineral cells. HVAC365 carries the Lion hard-plumb system for pools up to 25,000 gallons in its mineral sanitizers section. The controller setting is scaled to pool volume, and the mineral cell is a wear item that is replaced as the electrodes are used up. More options are under filters and sanitizers.

No. ClearBlue's guidance is to keep chlorine at normal levels until copper reaches 0.2 ppm, then reduce chlorine to about 1 ppm rather than eliminating it.
ClearBlue recommends keeping copper between 0.2 and 0.4 ppm, testing every two days while building up and every two weeks once that level is reached.
