In the 1950s, Florida's hotels and resorts were booming, and so were their swimming pools. The filters that kept those pools clean were not keeping up. A commercial fisherman named John F. Harms, who had picked up mechanical skills during World War II, thought he could do better, and he started building filter housings at home.
Harms founded Harmsco in 1955. The company went on to develop pleated polyester filter cartridges and then carried its filtration work into industrial and municipal water markets. Leadership passed to his son, Hank Harms, who serves as CEO, and the company is based today in Riviera Beach, Florida, a short drive from where it began.
The pleated cartridge was the quiet breakthrough. Folding filter media into pleats packs far more surface area into the same housing, so a cartridge can hold more dirt before it needs cleaning. That idea, refined in South Florida, became a standard part of how pools are filtered.
Harmsco makes filter housings and cartridges for pools, industry and water treatment. HVAC365 carries a Harmsco portable filter and the ST-105 replacement cartridge. Browse replacement filter cartridges, cartridge filters and portable pool vacuums.

A portable filter connects to its own pump and hoses so water can be filtered from a pool, spa or tank without relying on the built-in equipment, which is useful for cleanups and service work.
