Hart & Cooley: More Than a Century of Moving Air Through American Homes

In 1901, in the factory town of New Britain, Connecticut, two men looked at the cast-iron grates that covered the warm-air openings in American floors and saw a better way to make them. Howard Hart and Norman Cooley began stamping registers from sheet steel, lighter and cheaper than cast iron. More than a century later, the company they started is still in the business of getting air from the equipment to the room.

Chapter 1 · 1901

Stamped steel in New Britain

Hart & Cooley Manufacturing Company was founded in 1901 in New Britain, Connecticut, and is recognized as the first American company to make warm-air registers from stamped steel. It was a manufacturing idea more than an invention: by pressing registers out of sheet steel, the company could make them in volume at a price that suited the coal and gravity furnaces then spreading through American homes.

Chapter 2 · The 1920s to 1945

A Michigan home and a wartime detour

In the 1920s the company moved to Holland, Michigan, which would serve as its headquarters for almost 90 years. During the Second World War it set aside heating products entirely and turned its lines to electrical shipboard boxes and mortar shells. By the end of the war, normal production had returned.

Chapter 3 · 1950s to today

From registers to complete air distribution

In the second half of the twentieth century Hart & Cooley grew from registers into the rest of the air path, adding Type B gas vent for gas-fired appliances, all-fuel chimney systems and flexible air duct. The company celebrated its centennial in June 2001 and moved its headquarters about 30 miles to Grand Rapids, Michigan, several years later. Along the way it brought in names such as Selkirk, Milcor, Lima, Ward Industries and AMPCO, and today it runs manufacturing plants in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Wikipedia lists Johnson Controls as its parent company.

The Lineup

What Hart & Cooley builds today

Hart & Cooley makes grilles, registers and diffusers, duct system components, flexible air duct, Type B gas vent, chimneys and chimney liners, roof flashings and access doors. HVAC365 carries its insulated flexible duct.

F216 Series: R-6 insulated flexible duct with a silver jacket, in 25-foot bagged lengths. The 4-inch size is a common choice for bath fans and small branch runs, with larger diameters for supply branches and returns.

Browse the full range in flexible duct, or see related products in air distribution.

Flex duct works best when it is treated like part of the system rather than an afterthought. Runs should be pulled fully extended, supported at regular intervals and kept free of tight bends and kinks, because every sag and crush point steals airflow the equipment was sized to deliver. The R-6 insulation keeps conditioned air close to its design temperature as it crosses a hot attic, and the vapor jacket keeps humid attic air away from cold duct surfaces, which matters in a climate like South Florida's.

The Thread

Why air distribution matters

There is a quiet logic to a company that started with registers ending up in flexible duct. Both sit on the same path, the one between a furnace or air handler and the people in the room. Equipment gets the attention, but a mismatched register or a crushed duct run can undo a perfectly sized system. Hart & Cooley's long history is, in a sense, a history of that last stretch of the journey.
