80,000 BTU Furnace + 2 Ton Heat Pump Dual Fuel Systems

These dual fuel systems pair a 80,000 BTU gas furnace with a 2 Ton heat pump and a matched coil. The heat pump handles heating on most days and switches to the furnace when it gets cold enough that gas is the better buy, so you get furnace-grade warmth on the coldest nights without burning gas the rest of the winter.

A 2 Ton outdoor unit typically suits homes of about 900 to 1,200 square feet. That pairing leans toward heating: the furnace is large next to the outdoor unit, which suits homes in cold-winter climates, older or less insulated houses, and homes where winter heating is the bigger load.

What you’ll find here

  • Brands: Goodman
  • Cooling efficiency: 14.3 to 19 SEER2
  • Heat pump heating efficiency: 7.5 to 8.6 HSPF2
  • Furnace efficiency: 80%, 95%, 96% and 97% AFUE
  • Furnace configuration: upflow and downflow
  • Refrigerant: R-32
  • Every system is sold as an AHRI-matched set

How to choose

  • Confirm your furnace configuration (upflow, downflow or horizontal) matches your existing install
  • Choose 80% AFUE for mild winters and simple venting, 90%+ for cold climates and lower gas bills
  • Compare HSPF2 for heat pump heating efficiency and SEER2 for cooling
  • Size from a Manual J load calculation, not just square footage
  • Check the furnace cabinet width so the coil and plenum line up

How the furnace and heat pump share the work

An outdoor sensor and a dual fuel kit or communicating control decide which source runs. Above the switchover point, often set somewhere between 25°F and 40°F, the heat pump heats the home at a lower operating cost. Below it, the 80,000 BTU furnace takes over. Your installer sets that point based on local electricity and gas prices, so the system always uses the cheaper fuel.
