Deep in volcanic deposits in the United States lies a dense, glassy mineral called perlite. Heat it quickly and the trace of water locked inside turns to steam, and the rock pops like corn, swelling to as much as twenty times its size. Milled into fine, jagged particles, that expanded glass becomes one of the quietest workers in a swimming pool: the filter aid that coats a DE grid and catches what the fabric alone cannot.
Imerys is a French industrial minerals group headquartered in Paris. Its lineage reaches back to 1880 and a mining company formed by the Rothschild family; through a 1970 merger it became the holding company Imetal, renamed Imerys in 1999. Today it supplies specialty minerals to industries ranging from ceramics and paper to filtration, and its pool range includes both perlite filter aids, sold as AquaPerl and Harborlite, and diatomaceous earth sold under names such as Celite.
Harborlite perlite has served as a filter aid in the U.S. market for close to 50 years, mined from domestic deposits and expanded at processing plants across North America. AquaPerl is a low crystalline silica grade of perlite made for pool filters, usable in DE filters as a one-for-one replacement for diatomaceous earth at roughly half the weight, and noted for releasing its filter cake cleanly during backwash. HVAC365 carries both in our pool filter media range: Aqua-Perl perlite in 12.5-pound bags and Harborlite Defender perlite in 25-pound bags.
Aqua-Perl, written AquaPerl by Imerys, is a perlite filter aid for swimming pools that can replace diatomaceous earth one-for-one in DE filters at about half the weight.
Yes. Imerys says AquaPerl perlite works in DE pool filters as a direct one-for-one replacement for diatomaceous earth, and it backwashes faster and more thoroughly.
Harborlite perlite filter aids are made by Imerys, a French industrial minerals company, from perlite mined in the United States.
Perlite is a glassy volcanic rock that expands up to about twenty times its volume when heated, producing light, porous particles used as a filter aid.
