In June 2002 a seven-year-old girl named Virginia Graeme Baker drowned after the suction of a hot tub drain held her underwater. Her death led to a federal law, and that law changed what sits at the bottom of every public pool in America. Lawson Aquatics, founded by Robert Lawson, builds the main drains, sumps and grates that do that quiet safety work.
The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act was signed on December 19, 2007, and its drain cover rules became enforceable one year later. From then on, drain covers made or sold in the U.S. had to meet the ASME/ANSI A112.19.8 standard, and every public pool and spa had to use compliant covers, with extra safety devices required where a single main drain could be blocked.
Robert Lawson built Lawson Aquatics around main drain and rim-flow components: grating systems, main drains and sumps, and custom-fabricated parts, mostly in PVC and fiberglass. Its SuperSump molded drains carry certification to the Act's section 1404 through NSF International. In January 2012 Neptune-Benson of Coventry, Rhode Island, acquired the company. Evoqua Water Technologies bought Neptune-Benson in 2016, and in May 2023 Xylem completed its roughly $7.5 billion acquisition of Evoqua, bringing the Lawson line along.
HVAC365 carries Lawson drain and suction covers, including an 18 x 18 inch replacement main drain cover two-pack, covers only. Replacement covers should match the sump model and flow rating they were certified with. See more in drains, inlets and skimmers.

The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act, signed in December 2007, requires pool and spa drain covers to meet the ASME/ANSI A112.19.8 anti-entrapment standard.
Yes, Lawson sells covers on their own, but the replacement must be the cover certified for that sump and its flow rating to remain VGB compliant.
