The Brand Story

Maytronics: The Kibbutz That Taught Pools to Clean Themselves

In 1983, at Kibbutz Yizre'el in northern Israel, a small community-owned company set out to solve a problem that had little to do with farming. Cleaning a swimming pool meant someone standing at the edge with a long pole, pushing a vacuum head back and forth. The kibbutz engineers built a machine that could do it alone, climbing down into the water, crawling the floor and walls, and filtering as it went. They called it the Dolphin, and it was the first robotic pool cleaner.

Chapter 1 · 1983

One robot to start

Maytronics began with a single product, and that product defined a category. The early Dolphin was a self-contained machine with its own motors and filter, powered through a floating cable, that did not depend on the pool's pump or plumbing. That independence is still the defining trait of a robotic cleaner: it scrubs and filters on its own circuit, so the pool's main filter has less to catch and the pump does not have to run longer to power it.

Chapter 2 · 2004 to 2009

From the kibbutz to the world

The company grew into a global business through the 2000s. Maytronics went public on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange in 2004. In 2006 it launched the Dolphin WAVE 300, which it describes as the first heavy-duty commercial robotic pool cleaner, built for the large, busy pools of hotels, schools and public facilities. In 2007 it founded Maytronics US with a head office in Atlanta, Georgia, to serve the United States and Canada, and in 2009 it formed Maytronics France through the acquisition of MGI International.

Chapter 3 · 2020 to today

Beyond the robot

More recent years have brought wider distribution and new products. A German wholesaler, Bünger & Frese, joined the group in 2020, and in 2022 Maytronics bought an Australian master dealer and a majority stake in a U.S. pool supplies distributor. Today the company works with partners in about 65 countries across five continents, and its catalog has grown beyond robots to include pool safety products and mineral-based water treatment, though the Dolphin remains the heart of the brand.

The Lineup

What Maytronics builds today

Maytronics builds Dolphin robotic cleaners for above-ground, in-ground and commercial pools, from simple floor-and-wall models to app-connected machines with weekly scheduling. HVAC365 carries Dolphin robots for both homes and commercial facilities:

  • Robotic pool cleaners: the Dolphin Active 10 for in-ground residential pools and the Dolphin T25 with a 50-foot cable for larger residential pools.
  • Commercial robots: the Dolphin Wave 80, a commercial robotic cleaner for hotel, club and community pools, descended from the WAVE line that began in 2006.

Choosing a robot comes down to pool size, shape and surface, and how much of the wall and waterline it needs to scrub. Cable length matters most for long pools, and commercial models are built for longer daily duty cycles and heavier debris loads. Because a robotic cleaner carries its own filter, emptying and rinsing that filter after each cycle is the single biggest factor in how well it keeps cleaning.

There is also an energy argument. A robot runs on its own low-voltage power supply rather than the pool's main pump, so the pump does not have to run extra hours just to power a suction or pressure cleaner. For commercial operators, a robot that works overnight means a clean pool before the first swimmers arrive, without staff time at the end of a long pole.
