In 1900, in the small western Colorado town of Rifle, Fred Munro opened a general store. He could not have known that the family business would one day be building pumps. It took a mining boom, a world war, a uranium bust and five generations to get there, but the Munro name has stayed in the family the whole way.
Fred Munro and his son JR grew the Munro Mercantile into five stores across western Colorado. In 1936 JR and his son Jack, an engineer who had worked for the Bureau of Reclamation, opened S & M Supply to serve the mines. When new equipment was impossible to get during World War II, they kept operating mines running by rebuilding machinery left over from the gold and silver rushes, and by the 1950s S & M had become one of the largest mine supply houses in the western United States.
When uranium mining faded in the late 1950s, the family turned to water. In 1965 Jack and his son Allen opened Munro Supply, a business devoted to pumps.
Munro began engineering and fabricating its own pump stations in 1972, and in 1985 its first line of lawn pumps went into production. The company remains privately held and family operated, now led by Allen Munro and his daughter, Katie Munro Powell, with a focus on professional-grade irrigation products. Its catalog spans centrifugal, engine-driven, submersible, domestic water and sump pumps, packaged pump stations, controls and pump protection.
Munro builds pumps, pump stations, controls and irrigation delivery products for landscapes, agriculture and property water management. HVAC365 carries the Munro 5 hp, 230V RP Series traditional submersible pump in our cover, pond and sump pumps category, a heavy-duty choice for moving large volumes of water from ponds, sumps and reservoirs. Munro is privately held and family operated, and is led by Allen Munro and his daughter, Katie Munro Powell, the fourth and fifth generations of the family in business.
The family business dates to 1900 in Rifle, Colorado. Munro Supply, the pump business, opened in 1965, and Munro began manufacturing pump stations in 1972.
Munro makes centrifugal, engine-driven, submersible, domestic water and sump pumps, packaged pump stations, pump controls and irrigation delivery products.
A submersible pump sits underwater in a pond, sump or reservoir and pushes water up and out, which makes it well suited to draining, transferring and supplying water from below grade.
