Every cartridge filter on every pool and hot tub hides a simple object inside its housing: a cylinder of pleated fabric that catches what the water carries. It is the part that gets hosed off on a Saturday morning and replaced when it finally tears. Pleatco built a business around that one humble part, and around making it fit almost every filter on the market.
Pleatco is based in Glen Cove, on the north shore of Long Island, New York. By its chief executive's account it is a company of roughly four decades. For much of that time it was a small regional manufacturer of replacement filter cartridges serving the East Coast.
In 2006 Howard Smith bought the company. Trained as a lawyer, he had run distribution businesses in pharmaceuticals and specialty lamps and consulted for large corporations. Under his leadership Pleatco grew from that regional shop into what he described in 2019 as the leading maker of pool and spa filter cartridges in the United States, with a growing presence in Europe.
The company now manufactures in New York and Mexico, distributes from California and serves customers across the United States, Canada and Europe. Private equity firm Align Capital Partners later invested in the business. Pleatco also makes DE filter grids and filter cleaning products.

Pleatco cartridges use its Advanced point-bonded filtration fabric, a spun material whose fibers are fused at many small points rather than woven, giving a consistent pore structure. Its Advanced Ultra line adds a band-less pleat design the company calls Pure Pleat. To choose the right cartridge, match the original part number or a cross-reference number, the diameter and length, and the filter area in square feet. A cartridge that is too short or too narrow lets water bypass the fabric entirely. Rinse cartridges when filter pressure rises, and replace them when the fabric frays, the end caps crack or cleaning no longer brings pressure back down.
