QuietFlex: The Houston Duct Maker Inside the Goodman Family

Climb into a Florida attic in August and the air handler is not the first thing you notice. It is the duct: silver and black runs snaking across the joists, carrying cold air through a space that can top 130 degrees. Nobody admires it, and nearly everybody depends on it. In Houston, a company called QuietFlex has spent decades making exactly that unglamorous, essential product.

Chapter 1 · Houston

A duct company in a cooling town

QuietFlex Manufacturing Company is headquartered in Houston, on Brittmoore Road, and makes flexible ductwork for residential and commercial HVAC systems, along with fiberglass mats for industrial uses. By the mid-2000s its plants stood in Houston, Dayton, Tennessee, and Phoenix, Arizona, and it shipped mostly to Florida, the rest of the Southeast and Latin America, markets where air conditioning runs most of the year.

In 2006 the company added a 65,100-square-foot plant in Groveland, Florida, to make air duct and insulation products closer to its biggest customers, with plans to employ about 50 people. Today QuietFlex reports four manufacturing plants in the United States.

Chapter 2 · 2006 to today

Part of Goodman, then Daikin

Flexible duct sits at the very start of the Goodman story: Harold Goodman's first products in 1975 were flex duct and plastic registers. By 2006 QuietFlex was a division of Goodman Global, and when Japan's Daikin Industries acquired Goodman in 2012, QuietFlex became part of the Daikin Group as well. In 2020 Goodman named Ardee Toppe senior vice president and president of its Goodman, QuietFlex and PTAC business units, a reminder that the duct business is run alongside the equipment it connects to.

Chapter 3 · 2010

Rethinking what goes inside the jacket

Insulated flex duct is a sandwich: an inner core that carries the air, a blanket of insulation, and an outer jacket that holds it all together. In 2010 QuietFlex introduced HPDFlex, a formaldehyde-free flexible duct built for the higher static pressures of commercial systems, and said all of its flexible duct products used Johns Manville formaldehyde-free insulation. The company also cited GREENGUARD certification, an independent program that tests products for chemical emissions that affect indoor air.

The Lineup

What QuietFlex builds today

QuietFlex makes insulated and non-insulated flexible duct for homes, commercial buildings and manufactured housing. HVAC365 carries its R-6 insulated flexible duct in 25-foot lengths, from 4-inch to 18-inch diameters, in three families:

80 Series: R-6 insulated flex duct with a rip-stop silver jacket for indoor attic and crawlspace runs, from 4-inch bath fan and branch sizes up to 18-inch trunk sizes.
60 Series: R-6 insulated flex duct with a UV-inhibited black jacket, a tougher outer layer for runs exposed to light.
71 Series: R-6 insulated flex duct rated for outdoor use on HUD-code manufactured homes, in 12-inch and 16-inch sizes for crossover and supply connections.

Browse the full range in flexible duct, or see related fittings and components in air distribution.

The rating matters. R-6 describes the thermal resistance of the insulation blanket, and in a hot attic it is the difference between cold air arriving at the register and cold air warming up on the way there. Proper installation matters just as much: pulled tight, well supported and free of sharp bends, flex duct delivers the airflow the system was designed for.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about QuietFlex

Who owns QuietFlex?

QuietFlex is a business unit of Goodman, which has been part of Japan's Daikin Group since 2012.

Where is QuietFlex duct made?

QuietFlex is headquartered in Houston and operates four manufacturing plants in the United States, including a plant in Groveland, Florida, that opened in 2006.

Is QuietFlex related to Goodman?

Yes. QuietFlex was a division of Goodman Global by 2006 and today operates as one of Goodman's business units within Daikin.

What does R-6 mean on QuietFlex duct?

R-6 is the thermal resistance rating of the insulation around the duct core. A higher R-value slows heat gain, which helps cold air reach the register through a hot attic.

What is the difference between QuietFlex 80, 60 and 71 Series duct?

In our catalog, the 80 Series has a rip-stop silver jacket for indoor use, the 60 Series has a UV-inhibited black jacket, and the 71 Series is rated for outdoor use on HUD-code manufactured homes.
