In Columbus, Ohio, around 1940, Gene Winchester started a small building materials supply business. When the postwar building boom arrived and American towns filled with new houses, driveways and sidewalks, his company grew with them. It became Quikrete, a name familiar from hardware store shelves across the country, and from a few bags that end up at the bottom of a pool filter.
Quikrete traces its start to 1940 and a precursor company called Maintenance Products Inc. Winchester's sons Jim, Jack and Dennis later led the company and remain on its board, and the business is now headquartered in Atlanta. It opened its 20th plant in the 1970s, its 70th in the 1990s and its 100th in the 2010s. Beyond the familiar packaged concrete, mortar, grout and stucco, the Quikrete Companies have added brands in flooring preparation, pavers and retaining walls, concrete pipe and stormwater systems.
HVAC365 carries Quikrete pool filter sand in 50-pound bags in our pool filter media category. In a sand filter, pool water flows down through a deep bed of graded sand, which traps dirt and debris between its grains; backwashing reverses the flow to flush that debris to waste. Over years the grains wear smooth and filtration drops, which is when the sand gets replaced. Always check the filter manufacturer's label for the sand grade and the number of bags it needs. More options are in our filters and sanitizers section.
Quikrete pool filter sand is made by The Quikrete Companies, the Atlanta-based packaged concrete and building materials maker founded in 1940.

Sand wears smooth over time and filters less effectively. Many pool owners replace it every few years, following the filter manufacturer’s guidance on grade and quantity.
