Russell: The Coil Shop That Taught Walk-Ins to Keep Their Cool

In 1946, in Santa Fe Springs, California, the war had just ended, and every grocery, restaurant and produce house that wanted to grow needed the same thing: cold rooms that worked. Lewis Russell opened a company to make the heart of that cold, the finned coils that pull heat out of the air. He called it Russell Coil Co. More than 75 years later, the Russell name is still on unit coolers and condensing units across the country.

Chapter 1 · 1946 to 1948

Coils first, then the unit cooler

Russell started as a coil maker for the refrigeration and air conditioning trade. Within a year it had built its first machine for varying the fin spacing on a coil, a small detail that lets an evaporator shed frost and hold capacity at freezer temperatures. In 1948 came the All-Temp, a low profile unit cooler for small and medium walk-in coolers and freezers. The low profile cooler that hangs in so many walk-ins today owes a lot to that design.

Chapter 2 · 1965 to 1999

Growing up, and moving out

By 1965 Russell was building air handlers, air-cooled condensers and new unit coolers, including the Wedge. In 1967 ARDCO Glass acquired the company, and in 1971 Russell moved to a 60,000-square-foot plant in Brea, California. The 1980s and 1990s brought the RussCon condensing units, the RUSS ALL-PAK system, the MultiCon line and, in 1990, the first MiniCon air-cooled condensing unit. Plants followed in Yuma, Arizona, in 1985 and Scottsboro, Alabama, in 1999.

Chapter 3 · 1997 to today

From Carrier to Rheem

Carrier acquired ARDCO in 1997, and with it Russell. In 2010 Carrier sold its Heat Transfer Products Group, or HTPG, to Monomy Capital Partners, and in 2013 Rheem acquired HTPG, making it Rheem's commercial refrigeration business. Russell now shares that family with Witt, Kramer and ColdZone. Under Rheem, the brand launched the Next-Gen MiniCon in 2015, Next-Gen All-Temp unit coolers in 2017, center mount coolers in 2019, and Slim-Temp reach-in coolers in 2020.

The pace of that decade is easy to miss from the outside. Quantum Air remote air-cooled condensers arrived in 2016. Next-Gen II condensing units joined the line in 2017, and in 2018 Russell added QV-Series condensing units and EcoNet Enabled unit coolers, built to connect with smart controls. In 2020 alone the brand brought out medium profile, heavy duty and warehouse unit coolers alongside Slim-Temp. HTPG credits Rheem's investment in the brand with six consecutive years of product design awards. In 2021 Russell marked its 75th anniversary with a historical website and a contest for vintage Russell equipment still in service.

The Lineup

What Russell builds today

Russell builds unit coolers, condensing units, remote condensers and packaged systems for walk-in coolers, freezers, reach-ins and specialty rooms. The Russell equipment HVAC365 carries includes:

Low profile unit coolers: Next-Gen low profile models with 2-speed EC motors and air defrost, direct descendants of the 1948 All-Temp.
Reach-in coolers: Slim-Temp coils with Russ-Proof coated coils for display cases and reach-ins, and the compact Wedge-Temp.
Medium temp condensing units: Next-Gen MiniCon air-cooled scroll units, including extended medium temp models.
Low temp condensing units: freezer-duty units for walk-in freezers.
