In 1996, after three decades working in mining and metals, Dr. Donald Freas looked at a problem most people throw in the recycling bin. Glass, he realized, could be crushed, sized and cleaned with the same mineral-processing methods he had used his whole career. He set up a small plant on the old Henry Bacon Lumber site on Elliott Avenue in Seattle, and Trivitro was born.
Trivitro grew from that first small plant into a high-capacity processing facility in Kent, Washington, working with partner plants across North America. It is still family owned, with a third generation now involved. Every product is made from recycled post-consumer container glass or post-industrial plate glass scrap, and the company's products have included terrazzo aggregates and industrial abrasives as well as water filter media.
Trivitro's pool product is Vitroclean, crushed recycled glass designed as a direct replacement for silica sand in standard sand filters. Vitroclean Green and Vitroclean Aquatic are certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 50, and Vitroclean Pebble is a gravel replacement placed over the filter laterals. The company says the glass resists clumping and channeling, filters down to about 5 microns, lasts longer than typical sand and avoids crystalline silica dust.
HVAC365 carries Trivitro VitroClean filter gravel in 1/4-inch size, in 50 pound bags, in our pool filter media category.
Vitroclean is made by Trivitro, a family-owned recycled glass company founded in Seattle in 1996 by Dr. Donald Freas.
Vitroclean is made from 100% recycled post-consumer container glass or post-industrial plate glass scrap, crushed and sized for filtration.
Yes. Trivitro designs Vitroclean as a direct replacement for silica sand in standard sand filters.
Filter gravel is the layer placed over the laterals at the bottom of a sand filter, supporting the finer media above it.
