Grandaire 3.5 Ton Air Conditioner Split System: W5A5S42AKAWA + WCHL425AC
This system pairs the Grandaire W5A5S42AKAWA air conditioner with the WCHL425AC multi-position air handler. It is an AHRI-matched combination (AHRI reference 214879386), so the efficiency numbers below were certified for these two exact models working together. Both units are built for R-454B refrigerant and ship with factory TXV metering at the indoor coil.

The W5A5S42AKAWA is a single-stage, 3.5-ton air conditioner with a scroll compressor, internal pressure relief valve, internal thermal overload and front-seating service valves. It is long-line capable to 250 ft total equivalent length and can cool down to 0°F with the low-ambient kit.

Air handler: Grandaire WCHL425AC
The WCHL425AC is a multi-position fan coil that installs upflow, downflow or horizontal, so it works in a closet, attic, crawlspace or garage. Its multi-tap ECM blower (1/2 HP, about 1,225 CFM nominal) holds airflow better than a PSC motor as duct static rises, and a 90-second blower off-delay pulls extra cooling from the coil after each cycle. The cabinet is insulated to R-4.2 with a vapor barrier, leaks less than 2% at 1.0 in. W.C., and includes the refrigerant leak detection and dissipation system required for R-454B. Cabinet size: 49-5/8 x 21-1/8 x 22-1/16 in. (H x W x D), 166 lb.
Electric heat
Heat strips are not included. If you want electric heat with this cooling system, choose a heater kit from the "Add an Electric Heat Strip" option above. Approved kits for this air handler: 5 kW (EHC05BKB), 8 kW (EHC07BKB), 10 kW (EHC10BKB), 15 kW (EHC15BKB), 20 kW (EHC20BKB). Ratings are at 240V; output is about 75% of that on a 208V supply.
Sizing and installation
Size the system from a Manual J load calculation rather than the size of the old unit. Line sets over 15 ft need a charge adjustment (0.60 oz per foot on 3/8 in. liquid line), and the installer should evacuate, leak test and commission the system to the manufacturer's procedures, which also keeps the warranty in force.
