Horizontal AC + Gas Furnace Systems

Horizontal air conditioner + gas furnace systems are matched outdoor and indoor equipment built around a furnace that moves air sideways. They are made for attics and crawl spaces where the furnace lies on its side and air travels sideways into the trunk line. Getting the configuration right is the first step in a smooth replacement: it decides how the furnace connects to your existing plenum and return, and whether the cased coil sits above, below or beside it.

Each system here pairs the outdoor unit, a matched evaporator coil and a horizontal furnace that are certified to work together, so the efficiency on the listing is the efficiency the system is rated to deliver.

What you’ll find here

  • Brands: Goodman
  • Cooling efficiency: 13.4 to 16 SEER2
  • Furnace efficiency: 80%, 92% and 96% AFUE
  • Furnace configuration: upflow, downflow and horizontal
  • Also available with two-stage equipment
  • Refrigerant: R-32
  • Every system is sold as an AHRI-matched set

How to choose

  • Confirm the configuration matches your existing install before you compare anything else
  • Choose 80% AFUE for mild winters and simple venting, 90%+ for cold climates and lower gas bills
  • Compare SEER2 for cooling efficiency; higher numbers lower summer bills
  • Size from a Manual J load calculation, not just square footage
  • Check the furnace cabinet width so the coil and plenum line up

Is horizontal right for my home?

Look at how your current furnace is installed. If the supply plenum is on top, you need upflow. If the supply comes out the bottom into a floor duct, you need downflow. If the furnace lies on its side in an attic or crawl space, you need horizontal. Many furnaces are multi-position and listed as more than one configuration, but the coil and the venting still have to suit the install, so confirm the layout with your contractor before ordering.
