Downflow Gas Furnaces

Downflow gas furnaces are vertical HVAC heating systems designed so that air flows downward through the furnace before entering the ductwork. They are commonly installed in attics, rooftop mechanical areas, or elevated platforms where downward airflow is required for proper system design.

These furnaces use natural gas to generate heat and distribute it through duct systems, making them a reliable choice for homes and buildings with specific space or duct layout constraints.

What you’ll find here

  • Downflow gas furnace units for residential systems
  • High-efficiency condensing furnaces (90%–97% AFUE)
  • Standard 80% AFUE downflow models
  • Single-stage, two-stage, and variable-speed blower options
  • HVAC systems designed for attic or elevated installations
  • Compatible units for split AC and heat pump systems

How to choose

  • Confirm downflow orientation is required by your duct layout
  • Size the furnace using a proper heat load calculation (Manual J)
  • Match airflow (CFM) with your duct system and cooling equipment
  • Compare AFUE ratings for long-term energy efficiency
  • Choose variable-speed blowers for quieter and more consistent heating
  • Verify compatibility with evaporator coils and outdoor condensers
  • Check venting requirements (PVC for high-efficiency, metal for 80% systems)
  • Ensure proper condensate drainage for high-efficiency models

Downflow vs Upflow Gas Furnaces

  • Downflow furnaces: Air moves downward; typically used in attics or elevated installations
  • Upflow furnaces: Air moves upward; commonly installed in basements or ground-level closets
  • Downflow systems: Best for rooftop or space-restricted vertical airflow designs
  • Upflow systems: Most common in standard residential layouts

FAQ

What is a downflow gas furnace?
It is a furnace where air flows downward through the unit before entering the duct system.

Where are downflow furnaces used?
They are typically installed in attics, rooftop units, or elevated mechanical spaces.

Can downflow furnaces work with air conditioners?
Yes. They are commonly paired with central AC or heat pump systems.

Are downflow furnaces energy efficient?
Yes. High-efficiency models can reach up to 97% AFUE.

Do downflow furnaces require special installation?
Yes. Proper orientation, venting, and drainage setup are essential for safe operation.

Do they require professional installation?
Yes. Installation involves gas connections, airflow balancing, venting, and system testing.
