The Brand Story

First Co.: Sixty Years of Fan Coils from Dallas

Dallas, 1966. Air conditioning is spreading fast through apartments and hotels, and every one of those rooms needs its own quiet, dependable source of cooling. The people building them need fan coils they can count on, in the quantities a whole building demands. A new Dallas company sets out to solve exactly that. It calls itself First Company, and today it is better known as First Co.

Chapter 1 · 1966

A reliable source of fan coils

First Co. was founded in 1966 with a single, practical mission: give a fast-growing HVAC market a reliable source of fan coils. A fan coil is the indoor half of many apartment and hotel systems, a cabinet with a blower and a coil that sits in a closet, a ceiling or a wall and conditions the space around it. It is not glamorous equipment, but a building with hundreds of units lives or dies by it.

From that starting point the company widened its range, adding more heating and cooling products for the same kinds of buildings: multifamily housing, hospitality and student housing.

Chapter 2 · 2016 and beyond

Built for buildings with many doors

When First Co. marked its 50th anniversary in 2016, it was still in Dallas and still focused on the buildings it started with. The company now describes a manufacturing base of about 900,000 square feet in Dallas and more than 5.5 million units delivered. Its product families include multi-occupant equipment, chilled water fan coils and water source heat pumps, and it describes its products as made in America.

It is also, by its own description, a family-owned business. First Co. speaks of more than 150 years of combined experience on its team, many employees with more than 30 years at the company, and a tool and die shop manager with 45 years of service.

The Lineup

What First Co. builds today

First Co. builds fan coils, air handlers, water source heat pumps and related equipment for apartments, hotels and dormitories, where many identical systems have to be installed and serviced room by room. Here is what HVAC365 carries:

The Next Chapter

The R-454B changeover

Federal limits on high global warming potential refrigerants have moved new residential and light commercial air conditioning away from R-410A. The First Co. condensers and fan coils in HVAC365's lineup use R-454B, a blend with a much lower global warming potential. Like other A2L refrigerants it is classified as mildly flammable, so installers use A2L-rated tools and follow the manufacturer's leak detection and installation requirements. Condensers and fan coils should be matched on the same refrigerant.
