The Brand Story
Comfortstar: An Independent Manufacturer With a Miami-Dade Address
Drive west from Miami along the river and the city gives way to warehouses, rail spurs and loading docks, the working side of South Florida. On South River Drive in Medley, Comfortstar runs its American operation, in a place where air conditioning is not a comfort but a condition of daily life. The company builds ductless mini splits, PTACs and ducted systems, and it describes itself with an unusual word in an industry of corporate families: independent.
Chapter 1
A manufacturer that answers to itself
Much of the heating and cooling business is a web of sister brands, private labels and parent companies. Comfortstar states plainly that it is an independent HVAC manufacturer, not affiliated with or owned by any other HVAC brand. Its leadership describes more than 50 years of combined experience in the industry, and the company lists Maria Hernandez as its president in the ACHR News industry directory.
The company does not publish a founding date, and we have not been able to verify one, so this page does not give one. What can be seen is the shape of the business: a manufacturer with its own product engineering, its own model families and its own warranty program, run from Miami-Dade County.
Chapter 2
Built around certification
For an independent brand, third-party testing does the work a famous name does for others. Comfortstar states that all of its products are AHRI and ETL certified, and it points to ISO 9001 quality management and ISO 14001 environmental management standards at its manufacturing facilities. AHRI certification matters most in practice: it is how a contractor confirms that an outdoor unit and an indoor unit, installed together, deliver the efficiency and capacity printed on the paperwork.
The company's stated mission is simple, to "bring daily comfort to all aspects of life." In a hot, humid climate that means equipment chosen for long run hours and steady humidity control as much as for peak efficiency numbers.
The Lineup
What Comfortstar builds today
Comfortstar's catalog covers four families: ductless mini splits, packaged terminal air conditioners, unitary ducted equipment and light commercial systems. Its trade names include COMFORTSTAR and COMFORTSTAR PLUS. Here is how the range carried by HVAC365 fits together:
- Ductless mini splits: the eco Smart series on R-32 refrigerant, in heat pump and cooling-only versions around 17 SEER2, and the higher-efficiency Alegria line, including Alegria Hi-Heat systems rated up to about 24 SEER2. Systems are offered by capacity, so it helps to shop mini splits by room size.
- PTAC heat pumps: through-the-wall units from 7,000 to 15,000 BTU, the kind of equipment found under hotel and apartment windows, with EER ratings printed in each model name. The current PTAC series runs on R-32.
- Central split systems: condensers and matched air handlers, including air conditioning condensers on R-454B refrigerant.
- Heat pump systems: the Star Pro inverter heat pump split systems at up to about 18.4 SEER2 with multi-position air handlers, and the BAH series, such as the BAH17 two-ton system at 14.3 SEER2. The full range can also be compared by efficiency under heat pump systems by SEER2.
- Air handlers and heat strips: front-return air handlers with constant torque ECM blower motors, plus electric heat strips, such as a 15 kW kit for package units, that supply backup or primary heat.
- Heat pump split systems for heating: the same heat pump systems, grouped with forced-air heating equipment for buyers starting from the heating side.
- Beyond our catalog: Comfortstar also builds The Easy Fit packaged equipment, 80% and 96% AFUE gas furnaces, and light commercial systems such as the CSV, CPH7 and CDP7 lines.
Inside the Equipment
Air handlers, motors and heat strips
Two details in Comfortstar's air handler listings are worth understanding. A constant torque ECM blower motor is an electronically commutated motor that holds a programmed torque as filters load and duct pressure changes, using less electricity than the older permanent split capacitor motors it replaced. Electric heat strips are resistance heating elements that slide into an air handler or package unit. In South Florida they mostly serve as backup on the few cold mornings each year, while in cooler regions they carry the load when outdoor temperatures drop below what a heat pump handles efficiently. Heat strip size, measured in kilowatts, must match the air handler model and the circuit feeding it.
The Next Chapter
A new generation of refrigerants
Comfortstar's current catalog shows the industry's refrigerant shift in plain sight. Its mini splits and PTACs have moved to R-32, while new central air conditioning condensers use R-454B. Both replace R-410A, have a much lower global warming potential, and carry an A2L (mildly flammable) safety classification, so they are installed with A2L-rated tools and the manufacturer's current procedures. Because the refrigerants cannot be mixed, an older R-410A outdoor unit is normally replaced together with a matched indoor unit rather than paired with new equipment.
In the Field
Where each product fits
A PTAC suits a single room with an exterior wall and a sleeve, where no ductwork exists. A ductless mini split brings quieter, higher-efficiency heating and cooling to one room or several zones, with a small line set running to an outdoor unit. A central split system or heat pump serves a whole house through existing ducts, with an air handler indoors and heat strips for backup heat. Choosing between them starts with the building, not the brochure: what ducts exist, how many rooms need conditioning, and where the outdoor equipment can live.
